It is currently resized by the long side, which causes the thumbnails of long or wide images to be blurry.
For example, if resize=480, the long image can only be resized to 50x480, and the wide image can only be adjusted to 480x50. I'd like to see it adjusted by the short side instead, so that the thumbnails can be used for clarity

amwps Glad you solved it, but this doesn't make much logical sense. In your case, you will then get a thumbnail 320 x 3072 ... This is not a thumbnail. And what is the original image dimensions anyway? How do you know it's creating a thumbnail and not just showing the original? You might as well just keep the original, because it won't even create a thumbnail if the original is less than 3072 px tall. Finally, how will the layout take advantage of a 320 x 3072 px tall image? Only the columns layout can take advantage of this, else it will get cropped and/or scaled down a lot anyway.
