It's definitely possible. You can point Files root option to any disk location, for example 'C:\external\drive'
, but success may depend on how your server is setup.
1. Are the disks available in your server document_root?
For example can you access http://localhost/harddrive1/file.jpg
? I am guessing no. This is normally the prerequisite to show any files on a web server, although there are workarounds:
2. Disks are outside document root
If the disks are outside your document_root
(which I assume they are), it may still work, but Files app will need to "proxy" files by loading them via PHP because they can't be accessed by URL.
3. Use symlinks
Another alternative, is to create symlinks in your website root, pointing to the disk locations.
Options 2 and 3 require that PHP has permissions to operate outside the document_root
and that the server has READ permissions for files outside the document_root
.
So yes it's possible, and it's quite normal, but there are some base requirements.
